Description

A mid 18th century London (Lambeth) delft ware large plate or charger. This pattern is referenced to the Lambeth factory around 1760. English delft was an attempt to imitate Chinese porcelain of the period at a lower cost and the tin glaze used is similar to the European faience ware. The pattern is a Chinoiserie form of a garden and fence, and the decoration around the rim is typical of the Lambeth factory. These pieces are of course all hand painted and glazed over a relatively soft earthenware body. There is an old collectors label to the reverse correctly identifying the item, there is also a figure of 1786 which is perhaps a cataloguing number as it seems too specific for dating and is a little later than usually prescribed for this design.

Condition

Good for the period. Some glaze loss and minor chips around the rim. Some crazing and some minor firing flaws as expected for this period. Two patches of glass loss to the reverse (later coloured in to reduce visibility). Rings true still.
