retailer of art and bijouterie.  The portrait is not signed, however removing the back of the frame reveals further stickers, with one for Pierres Des Aples Chr Goerg Geneve, 33 Rue du Rhone, perhaps the framer.  There is another paper sticker, possibly with the customers details and some pencil text which I can't make out.  There is also an impressed clay mark E15.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The potrait is very well executed with a subtlety of tone which is lost somewhat under the studio lighting for the pictures here.  The frame is also quite remarkably detailed being carved with suggest early 19th century for the period.  They were probably used for bonbons or exotic fruits.  Lovely looking pieces and I doubt you are ever gong to see another pair the Tiffany and it dates to the very first years of the 20th century.  This plate style was made in two forms, the standard version with flat gilding and this luxury style with raised gilt harebells which look like little gems and the embossed gilt bands and gilded foot rim.  It is painted with Ptarmigan in a Scottish landscape, a favourite subject for Hancock and it is signed by the artist to the It has the Italian form of fleur de lys decoration within a wreath, and there are Raphaelli style grotteschi (grotesques). There also appear to have been serpentine handles which are now removed at the rim line. The style and painting form is very much in line with work from Urbino and Deruta, and it is very likely this item was produced there. The form and painting of the grotteschi are perhaps more in the Urbino style. It appears to be an early example, perhaps as far back as the early 18th century. The potting, foot form and decoration do suggest an early date, it also came with a group of late 17th\/early 18th century continental ceramics.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe vase has a mark to the underside in blue. I can't find this referenced and it does not appear to be one of the usual Deruta or Urbino forms, the nearest example is for the workshop of Maestro Giorgio Andreoli, although the time period and form do not seem to match. Similarly decorated examples with serpent type applique are referenced at some of the higher end auction houses as late 16th and early 17th century, although they are generally less exactingly painted. It has the label for the contents around the top 'Ollio: D'Ipericon Semplice' This medicinal oil preparation is noted in the Italian medicinal recipe book: Ricettario Fiorentino di Nuouo Illustrato - published in 1623. It is a preparation of St. John's Wort used to help with burns and wounds. The label uses the early form and spelling from the 1623 book rather than the more common later form.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlong with the label there is a name around the base: Ciriaco - this would be the name of the apothecary, and it is quite a rare feature on this already rare form of drug jar. Note also the religious figure to the front of the jar making a hand gesture. Lionel Edwards was a famous water colour artist of the period, a member of the Royal Institute and illustrated books including Black Beauty and Lorna Doon. This is one of the charms of these pieces and is caused by relatively uncontrolled firing, there is also a nice crackle to the glaze adding extra texture. The complexity of production made these pieces very expensive in their time with high losses during production and painstaking hours of decorative detail for each one. Ms Makeig Jones was known to scrutinise the production to ensure each piece captured her vision of her design. Their exclusivity drove the desirability which still remains today with intense interest for collection and investment.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis example is of the 'Butterfly Women' pattern with the 'cobble bead' base. There are birds around the rim, and the interior is in pale lustre with playfull imps and the 'green leaf' border. The Wedgwood code for this design is Z4968 which is scripted to the base and it dates around 1920. This trumpet vase was made in three sizes, this example is the tallest form with 6\" and 8\" versions also produced. The ground is a very dark midnight blue, but under strong lighting it comes alive with brushed strokes of petrol iridescence which seem to shimmer as you hold and view the piece.  This example has particularly good colour and iridescence \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA near identical example is held at the Museum of St. Petersburg, Florida, USA. The enclosed spout would serve to strain large chunks of ice or fruit. It is made to a good standard for it's type and likely dates in the 1860-80 region.  There are no makers marks and this is not a design I have been able to reference, although it is almost certainly by the young Queen Victoria.  His show became so popular that souvenir ware was quickly produced and a number of jugs both printed and moulded can be found celebrating his performances.  Many are quite poorly produced with little detail, but some such as this piece here are quite well executed.  The scenes are taken from engravings of the period, and artwork including those by Landseer.  This jug features a scene from the 'The Brute Tamer of Pompeii', part of Van Amburgh's show.  He was not without controversy at the time with some citing harsh and cruel training
