Description

A very attractively decorated Awata region Satsuma vase with a baluster shaped body and pedestal base. It is decorated with traditional patterns and raised enamel work with gilt over the ivory colour ground. It is decorated with children at play with finely lined detail in gold and black. It is signed to the underside of the base as can be seen in the image. The style is suggestive of Yasuda work at the Awata kilns and it dates to the late 19th century during the Meiji period of Japan.

Condition

A good example with the usual fine crazing expected for these items. Two faint hairlines to the rim, quite stable and from firing stress rather than damage. Gilt wear at the rim but elsewhere the gilt is largely intact.
