Antique Victorian Solid Silver & White Opal Glass Snuff Bottle London 1852 (Code 1610)

A 19th century silver mounted and opaline glass snuff bottle.  It is in the shape of a flattened egg with flat base, not dissimilar to some ladies smelling salt or perfume bottles of the same period.  The glass is thick and heavy giving the piece a weighty feel, the tone is also lovely having a kind of moon glow when strongly lit.  The mount is of high quality and in hallmarked silver.  The makers mark is perhaps T.M and looks very similar to that used by Thomas Mills, however he is usually listed as a watch case maker, so this may be by another hand.  The hallmark is for London 1852 making this and early Victorian piece.  The cap was originally gilded, much of this has worn through handling, but traces can be seen in protected spots such as beneath the hinge.  The interior of the cap is impressed with the retailers mark for Howell & Co, London who operated from Regent Street.  A lovely high quality piece as you can see in the images.

 

Some wear to the silver and general scuffs and scratches as expected for period.  Minor damage to the glass lip inside the lid.  Hinge and latch working fine.  Some dents to cap.
