the framer.  There is another paper sticker, possibly with the customers details and some pencil text which I can't make out.  There is also an impressed clay mark E15.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The potrait is very well executed with a subtlety of tone which is lost somewhat under the studio lighting for the pictures here.  The frame is also quite remarkably detailed being carved with somewhat unusual in that it has been painted to look like rosewood (an expensive material), a technique called scumble and popular in the late 19th and early 20th century.  This helps date the piece and it is likely around 1900.  The figure of Christ is cast and plated as is the INRI plaque, and these are simply nailed on (perhaps appropriately) using tacks.  The cross sits in the base block and slots in and out at will, there is no sign it was ever glued or fixed so perhaps it was meant to be moved regularly, or a travelling cross of sorts.  The scumble painting is only done to the smooth grain of the block frontage, not the cut curve or sides.  Quite possibly a hand made personal piece of work rather than rim to allow air to escape during firing.  They have gadrooned rims and look like miniature copies of garden urns.  There are no marks to assist with identification, but the style and production suggest early 19th century for the period.  They were probably used for bonbons or exotic fruits.  Lovely looking pieces and I doubt you are ever gong to see another pair the stone is typical of the green Duan type with some marbling, there is also a more sandy coloured area and at the head end a darker inclusion.  There are no character marks that I can detect.  Collectors will know that dating these items is problematic, I have shown this to two other people who have experience of inkstones and both suggested a mid 19th century period for the production as the most likely.  It is unlikely to be an earlier piece, but also does not appear to be one of the more recent reproductions which are now found in large numbers.  It certainly has signs of use and left) and then it pops open under spring loading.  Inside is a mirror which appears to be polished chrome or similar (rather than glass).  There is a reserve for blusher or powder and a lidded section, likely for a small puff.  The compact is smaller than average and clearly meant as a very portable example which could be taken anywhere.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEmbossed around the outside of the mirror is the word 'Slydacase' referencing the opening mechanism and likely some form of trade name, however I can't find a reference to this despite the manufacturers name (Marathon) also being present.  Marathon were known for producing lighters and compacts during the Art Deco period, they also had a sliding mechanism for lighters.  So perhaps this is something which did not take off or was produced in very small numbers compared to their normal pieces.  It is certainly both very attractive and and even have the original stoppers.  On opening the front panel falls forward to make accessing the bottles easier.  This type of item is associated with retail at the Palais Royal in Paris and it is well so they were clearly at the top end of what was already a luxury item.  They have clear hallmarks to the base rings and partial repeat marks to the inside of the lids.  The hallmark is for London 1907 making them Edwardian in period.  They were intended for hot alcoholic beverages such as whisky based blends.  Rare and lovely pieces for the It has the Italian form of fleur de lys decoration within a wreath, and there are Raphaelli style grotteschi (grotesques). There also appear to have been serpentine handles which are now removed at the rim line. The style and painting form is very much in line with work from Urbino and Deruta, and it is very likely this item was produced there. The form and painting of the grotteschi are perhaps more in the Urbino style. It appears to be an early example, perhaps as far back as the early 18th century. The potting, foot form and decoration do suggest an early date, it also came with a group of late 17th\/early 18th century continental ceramics.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe vase has a mark to the underside in blue. I can't find this referenced and it does not appear to be one of the usual Deruta or Urbino forms, the nearest example is for the workshop of Maestro Giorgio Andreoli, although the time period and form do not seem to match. Similarly decorated examples with serpent type applique are referenced at some of the higher end auction houses as late 16th and early 17th century, although they are generally less exactingly painted.
