Description

The famous William Ridgway Tam O'Shanter stoneware jug in the buff colourway.  This jug was the first moulded design to be dated (impressed 1835 to the base) and pre dates the Victorian period by 2 years.  The jug features Tam enjoying the tavern after market day and on the other side him being chased by witches on the way home.  One of the witches has caught Meg's tail and this is also detailed to the handle with a hand grasping the tail.  Impressed marks to the base.  The interior glazed to allow the jug to hold liquids.

Condition

Particularly good for period.  Minor firing flaws with a surface tear at the handles base.  Some breakout to the foot from the firing spurs.
