Antique Japanese Imari Temple Jar & Cover Porcelain Vase with Shi-shi Lion (Code 2686)
A large and impressive 19th century Japanese porcelain temple jar. The lid is surmounted by a shi-shi temple guardian which serves as the knop. It is decorated in the traditional Imari style with cobalt blue and iron red with panels of floral detail. There is a tree on a decked patio and lappets around the base. The vase is hand thrown and you can see the potters marks to the interior. Additionally all the decoration is also hand painted.
The exterior of the vase has a gentle ribbed detail which is continued in the lid. There is also gilt accenting, although due to the softness of this and the age it is now quite rubbed. It dates to the late Edo or Meiji period.
Aside the gilt rubbing which is pretty much inevitable for such pieces it is in very good order with slight wear.
