Description

A Ligurian, Savona Italian tin glazed earthenware wet drug jar.  It is painted in blue and white with a false gadrooning, a style synonymous with Savona.  It would have been used for liquid or syrup preparations and is titled in black gothic lettering.  The first part is somewhat unclear, but the rest of the lettering appears to read Il Rossol or similar.  This style of jar is generally assigned a date around 1700 although there is some speculated range between around 1680 and 1740.  Very similar examples can be found in the Fitzwilliam and the Hunt Museum.

Condition

Foot broken and restuck, an old repair with minor losses at the breaks.  Other minor chipping and glaze loss.  End of spout likely reduced as there is no glaze at that point.  There are of course minor potting and firing flaws as always for this early period.
