Description

A 19th century Victorian Tunbridge ware sewing box dating around 1870.  It is nicely shaped with incurving sides and a sarcophagus form.  It is inlaid in tapestry style with rose type flowers in contrasting wood.  The top panel is set with a feature flower spray on a light wood panel.

Around the inlaid panels the box is veneered in rosewood of medium colour and nice grain.  There are also geometric bands and details in typical Tunbridge style.  The box is fitted with a brass lock which has a deep escutcheon and the lock is stamped patent.  The lock is functional and comes with a tasseled key.

The interior features a lift out tray that would have had dividers at some point but is now plain.  The interior is decorated with patterned paper.  To the lid is a ruched silk center surrounded by a Tunbridge band.  There is a center screw mount which must have previously carried some sort of fitting.  The base is covered with a green felt which is a modern replacement.

Condition

About typical for period.  Some lifting of inlay making the surface a little uneven in places but no major problems.  There are some shrinkage splits to the veneers as typically found.  There are a couple of old small repairs, largest to the front lower right and shown in close up for you.  It has the usual knocks and wear an tear of a utility item.  Interior silk now discoloured and patchy and some wear and loss to the paper as you would expect.  Dividers no longer present from tray. Split in wood to base visible from the interior but hidden by felt to underside.

The box has been cleaned and polished and is ready for display as you can see in the images.  Looks very nice on show as you can see.
