Antique 19th Century Mahogany Ladies Work Box with Chevron Stringing c1880 (Code 1179)
A 19th century small work box with attractive strung inlay in a chevron pattern. It has a lock and key although the lock is non funtional so this is just decorative. The lid is dome topped and the box is quite shallow. There is a diamond strung shape to the top of the lid. The wood appears to be a light form of mahogany and has interesting figuring. The interior has been relined, probably in the 1970's with the Blue Peter favourite of sticky backed plastic. An attractive example which would be fine for small jewellery etc.
Interior relined, lock does not operate. Small piece of wood let in above the key hole to repair damage. Overall a nice looking usable piece.
