Indian Tortoiseshell & Bone Decorated Jewellery Box Vizagapatam Region c1900 (Code 2319)

Description

An Indian jewellery or table box from the Vizagapatam region and dating circa 1900.  The exterior is veneered with tortoiseshell and has decorative bone detail including fretwork panels.  The interior is lined with purple velvet to the base and lid.  The box has a working lock and comes with the key.  The feet are carved bone and there is a purple silk panel to the underside of the box.  As usual for these items it is not marked, it it very rare to find a makers mark on such boxes.

Weight: 540 grams (before packing).

Condition:  Minor period wear.  Lock and hinges good.  Partial loss of bone decorative panel to lid on left side..  Minor flaws in tortoiseshell veneer including small repair to lid corner.
