Antique Chinese Horn & Brass Table Snuff Box with Engraved Dragon & Studding (Code 2677)

Description

A very unusual heavily constructed box in horn with an engraved brass plaque and white metal studding.  It would appear to be Chinese and late 19th century in period.  It was most likely intended for snuff or possibly other illicit substances.  The walls are particularly thick and sturdy well beyond any practical purpose.

The plaque to the top is engraved with a coiling dragon and there are decorative studs around the panel.  To the underside is a plaque engraved with initials (perhaps PE or EP).  Around the center of the body is a band of rough texture from the horn deliberately left for contrast.  It would make a very nice box for the desk or study and and should be resilient enough for regular use.

Condition

Generally very good for period.  Some softening of the engraving through polishing over the decades.  Minor wear.  Scratches to base, slight nibbles to inner rim.
