Description

A 19th century repousse bowl from the Kashmir region of India dating around 1880. The decoration of the traditional Chinar leaf decoration is formed from repousse work with further chased and hammered detail. The Chinar tree is revered in the region and many come to see the autumn colours and leaf fall in Srinagar and the wider region.

The bowl is made from copper which is very thickly plated in silver and would pass as such were it not for the copper showing through in some high spots. In form it looks more like old Sheffield plate than electrplated work. The bowl is hand made and has an indented base detail. It has a lovely form and the leaves catch the sunlight and glint at different angles.

Condition

Good for period, some wear to the plating with the copper showing through it high points. It is polished and ready for display.
