Description

A rare mid 19th century Indian brass betel nut cutter.  It is probably from the Deccan or Northern regions and is decorated with concentric circles.  The opening is semi circular with the blade hinging and captive within the cutting slot.  The body is brass and the blade and pivot are steel.  The blade is scarf jointed into the brass mount, not just riveted on top.  It has decorative bird type forms to the top of the blade mount.  The brass looks as if it was probably wrought rather than cast.  A lovely example of a scarce form for the collector of betel paraphernalia or Indian metalwork.

Condition

Very good decoratively as can be seen.  Some nicks in the blade from use.  Possibly had some ornamentation on the top tang between the birds originally.
