Pair Fine Antique Signed Hododa Japanese Satsuma Ware Vases with Deities (Code 1912)

A fine pair of 19th century Hododa (also referred to as Hotoda) satsuma ware vases.  Square panelled earthenware bodies with finely painted scenes of deities and allegorical figures.  Of particular note is the finely painted raised gilt decoration to the shoulders with various shaped forms of formal design.  The panels also feature exquisite detail to the costumes and extensive use of gold.  Note the flying female figure in one panel which appears to be an unusual feature.

They are signed to the base for Hododa with the Satsuma-Yaki mark and the Shimazu family crest above.  One also retains a partial original paper label which is a very nice touch.  Also included are the matching carved hardwood stands as seen in the images.  The vases date around 1870-80.

Condition

Very well preserved examples.  Slight wear in places but no significant losses to decoration.  Fine crazing as expected.  Very finely executed decoration.
