Description

A large bronze merit medal for the World Fair exhibition in Vienna, 1873.  The front has figures emblematic of labour by German artist Karl Schwenzer and the medallion was cast by J Tautenhayn.  The obverse has the bust portrait of Franz Joseph.  The front reads 'Weltausstellung 1873 Wien'  'Dem Verdienste', the obverse reads 'Franz Joseph I, Kaiser Von Oesterreich Koenig Von Boehmen Etc, Apost Koenig Von Ungarn'.

It is also etched around the rim 'Henry C Collinson', these medals were awarded for merit.  There was a Collinson & Lock (furniture maker) exhibiting at this exhibition, so it is possible the award relates to this company.


Condition

Minor wear, some patina rubbing of the high points to the Kaiser's head from sitting on a hard surface.
