Henry Pasley of Sheffield Warranted Superior Antique Ebony & Brass Brace Drill (Code 2213)
Possibly the rarest and most coveted of all antique brace drills! It is by Henry Pasley of Sheffield and dates to the mid to late 19th century. It is made of brass and ebony and is very solidly manufactured being a heavy duty piece. It has a number of stamped details including 'Henry Pasley's Own Manufacture' - 'The Ne Plus Ultra Framed Brace' - 'Sheffield' - 'Metallic Framed Patent Brace'. To the head it is set with a 'Warranted Superior' eagle medallion. There is also the royal coat of arms and to the other side it is marked for R.G. Boydell, likely the original owner.
It does have knocks and marks and was clearly a working piece, but the condition is perhaps a testament to how well it was built as it seems to operate fine with just the sweep handle being stiff. It also comes with an assortment of period bits, some from well known and highly regarded British makers including Snell and Jennings.
Wear, knocks etc as expected for a working piece. Hairline shrinkage splits to the sweep handle. Small piece missing to the inlay in the head, see images for overall condition. Bearings still seem good with little slop, spring in the chuck still operating. Sweep handle tight but I've not tried to oil it. Bits with wear and damages to some.
