The inkwell is in Sterling silver and is hallmarked. The striated Turkish willow onyx hexagonal base is very attractive and sets of the silver very nicely. The cap is weighted so opens easily and stays open when pushed back and there is a small finger grip. Internally there is a base metal liner which is perhaps copper or zinc (now patinated to black) and there is a further later added removable liner in plastic which is handy should you wish to use the item as an inkwell.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe main hallmarks to the body are rubbed through decades of polishing, but the repeat mark on cap gives the date letter for 1912, and there is also the Mappin \u0026amp; Webb stamped mark to the reverse. Additionally there are etched initials to the front skirt of 'W.B' although these are also now much softened from polishing. with carvings and a very unusual lock.  The style is Spanish from the early to mid 19th century and it is likely the box is from this region.  We suspect some of the elements including the base form of the box may be earlier and that it was made into this final form around 1840-60.  The carvings are applied to the box rather than being blind carved from the wood, the moon faced birds are particularly unusual.  The box is of wedge form with internal divisions lined with blue velvet.  The wood appears to be walnut.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePerhaps the most unique aspect is the latch.  It works using a brass clock dial and when the hand is in the right position is allows the latch to be withdrawn and the box opened.  It is more novelty than security as the open point is designated by a bump in the dial.  We have not come across this form previously and the exact method used is hidden under the fabric.  It does appear more artisan than factory made.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe shape and internal dividers suggest it was intended for something specific although we have been unable to identify what this may
