The tang, which forms a small projecting lip at the opening edge, is used to lift and open the hinged lid. Inside, the grill is finely pierced and chased and fully gilded, with the inner surfaces of the lid and base also gilded to protect against the corrosive effects of the vinegar-soaked sponge it was designed to contain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Birmingham hallmark dates the piece to 1817, placing it firmly in the George III period. diamonds to each side in a mill grain setting.  The diamonds are rose cut in the antique style.  The case is opened with a press button mechanism also set with jade.  The interior features a mirror and a lift up compartment with a separate open compartment to the right.  The interior is gilt washed.  To the open area inside the case there are two marks, these are very indistinct due to poor stamping, however it appears to be the boars head for the French 800 silver standard and the maker's mark which begins with a J.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA very stylish piece of French Deco and
