Description

A particularly interesting Georgian period silver toddy ladle. The hallmarks are rather worn, but you can make out enough to see it was hallmarked in London in 1802 during the reign of George III. It has a twisted baleen handle with a ferrule at the top. The unusual aspect though is the rare coin which is set into the bowl. It is an (Italian States) Venetian silver Ducato from the dogeship of Francesco Loredan which dates the coin from 1752 to 1762. The coin is now rare, and was most likely collected during a 'grand tour' around 1800 with the new owner then having it incorporated into this toddy ladle. The coin features are all visible and it portrays St Mark handing the staff to the doge. The mint masters mark 'SB' is also seen to this face. The ladle bowl is Sterling grade silver and the coin is specified as being slightly below this in numismatic catalogues. A very interesting piece, and probably unique.

Condition

Some wear and rubbing of the hallmarks and fine detail of the coin. Minor deformations of the bowl but nothing major. The handle is pretty good with one hemispherical burn or wear patch and some wear nearer the top.
