Description

A fine antique pictorial silver card case / purse.  It has the Birmingham hallmark for 1901 and the makers mark for Henry Matthews also of Birmingham in the famous jewellery quarter.  One face depicts a classical garden from a country house with stone balustrade surrounded by scrolling detail and flowers.  The other side features young classical lovers on a swing in a woodland setting again surrounded by scrolled patterns.

The makers marks and hallmarks are hidden in the pattern and take close scrutiny to find.  Opening the case with the spring tab there is a green silk lining with pouches.  It would accommodate cards or paper money, but doesn't seem sturdy enough for coins.  Overall it is a beautiful piece with exuberant design dating on the transition between the Victorian and Edwardian period.

Condition

Very good for period, some softening of the detail from polishing over the years.  Clasp and hinge good, a beautiful piece.
