Description

A mid 18th century George II period wine glass.  It has a hollow tubular stem and is termed an excise glass.  It is considered that these designs were in reaction to the glass tax in an attempt to reduce material usage and thus cost.  This interpretation is not universally agreed with others suggesting it was just a design choice and attempt to refract light nicely through the stem.

This example has a large funnel bowl which is etched with a traditional OXO band.  The foot is conical and has a rough snapped pontil.  Composition is English lead glass.

Condition

Generally good with little wear for period.  Foot does appear to have been re-polished, this is usually done to remove a chip.
