Vintage Minton Pate sur Pate China & Gold Neo Classical Dinner/Cabinet Plate (Code 2130)
A fine quality Minton pate-sur-pate dinner plate. This example has three panels with a pastel blue ground each with a classical vase design. There is elaborate raised gold detail in the Adams taste and gold brocade work with a Greek key design etc. One panel has the artists name - A Pointon. The reverse has the Minton mark in gold along with impressed marks. The mark also carries the retailers mark for Henry Birks & Sons, a Canadian high class jeweller and retailer in Montreal.
In the mid 20th century Minton restarted production of pate-sur-pate which was halted due to war in the early 20th century. One similar example we have carries a paper price lable which was likely original to the retailing in the 1960's. Adjusting for inflation makes this item around $2100 (£1650) current equivalent when sold. This leads to the reason why these items are so scarce, sales were very limited - and they are actually better value now than they were some 50 years ago whilst being even more exclusive.
Some visible scratches to the face, mostly to the plain central area and from utensil usage. Slight gilt loss around rim.
