An Antique Mercury Study or Desk Thermometer Mounted with a Bronze Eagle (Code 8050)
A mid 19th Century desk or study thermometer. It is of columnar form with the thermometer and scale plate captured in the centre. The thermometer is of mercury type and the scale is in Fahrenheit. On the right side of the scale plate is some text the bottom of which reads ‘Freeze’. Above this it is a little harder to determine, a close up for you is shown in image 5.
The thermometer is surmounted with an eagle with outswept wings grasping onto a plinth with its clawed feet. The eagle is patinated as are the bases to the columns. The columns themselves appear to be of brass and the scale plate is silvered. The base plinth and top plate are in black enamel. This would have been a very fine and expensive item in its day and has a good antique look for the classic study or desk.
Please note we are unable to ship this item outside the UK mainland.
Wear and aging to metal as expected for period. Some verdigris developing around the base of the columns visible in image 6 and adding extra interest to the patination. Good overall patination developed to bronze areas. Columns quite bright. Some enamel loss to base and upper plinth. Thermometer appears to be working correctly. Thermometer bracket detached at right point to the top but not affecting use or stability.
