An Antique Victorian Tunbridge Ware Rose Inlaid Box attb Thomas Barton (Code 8223)
An antique square form Tunbridge ware box dating to the late 19th century around 1870. It is unmarked but the work is in the style of Thomas Barton and it is likely this item is from his workshop.
The top of the box is set with a large inlaid rose surrounded by a geometric band. There is a further stylised band running around the lower section of the box. The interior of the box is plain with a red velvet type lining.
The box was fitted with a lock, however the internal mechanism is missing to it can no longer function and there is no key present.
Lock mechanism missing so does not function. Some movement in the inlay to the top to the rightside (expansion over time) giving a vertical split in the veneer through the rose and a slight offset in the pattern at top and bottom. End pieces of veneer have been reset at these point. All this visible in the images for you. Otherwise about typical for period and still looks nicely cleaned and polished.
