Antique 18th Century Derby Porcelain Hand Painted Botanical Specimen Shaped Dish (Code 2419)

  • £29500

Description

A late 18th century Derby botanical dish.  It is of lozenge shaped form with slightly scalloped body and rim and was probably from a fruit or dessert service.  It is hand painted with dodecatheon meadia (primula, aka American cowslip).  It is named in the Latin to the reveRse and blue-grey script.  The Derby mark is hand painted and the dish dates around 1790.  The old collectors label to the reverse suggests it was painted by William Billingsley.  There is also the collectors identification sticker, with this item formerly being in the Cottam collection (a ceramics researcher and reference book writer).

Condition

The painting in good order with some minor wear patches to the flowers, probably from stacking wear.  The ground has kiln dust from firing visible to both faces.  Gilt rim surprisingly good for period with some rubbing in places.
