Antique 19th Century Classical Gilt Bronze Girondelle Green Man Candle Mirror (Code 1456)
An early 19th century classical girondelle mirror with mask head and decorative metal work. It appears to be of gilt bronze construction and has a metal cover to the back rather than the more usual wood. The design is very attractive and the mask head perhaps looks more like a rendering of the 'Green Man' rather than Bacchus. The candle arms simply slot into holes in a protruding bracket and they can be swung about as required. There are no makers marks but the item looks to have been intended for regular use and the form and aging suggest a date in the early 19th century and it may be continental rather than English. The mirror is custom cut and bevelled for the frame. A very striking piece, which is heavy for its size and of good quality casting.
Gilt worn and metal oxidised as expected for an original antique, the candle arms are most affected which is normal as they would receive the most handling. The mirror glass is in good order with minor wear and scratches. To the bottom of the metal work there are signs of joints so it may have had some decorative metal work below the bottom of the mirror which is no longer present. See images for overall presentation
