Antique Anglo-Indian Finely Carved Sandalwood Stationery / Letters Box c1880 (Code 1775)

  • £39500

A late 19th century Anglo Indian carved sandalwood box dating around 1870.  It is intricately carved with leaves and flowers and even the ground has been carved instead of being left plain or stippled.  There is a temple set to the top and there are various exotic birds, there is also a dog of some form to the reverse.  The carving is of a high standard as you can discern from the images and is in an interesting style.  It would appear to be from the Northern regions, but doesn't quite fit the usual work for Nagina, Kashmir etc.  It does exhibit some similarities with silver work from the Lucknow region which again suggests a Northern region attribution.

The box itself is set out as a stationery or letters box with three internal dividers forming four slots.  The base has been left plain and the box is very heavy for it's size due to the density and thickness of the carved panels.  A lovely example for the collector.

Minor period wear.  Small loss of edge carving to right side as viewed.  Lock not functional and locking spur not present.
