Antique Bohemian Glass Spa Beaker with Etched Motto Panels for Love & Joy (Code 0029)
A late 19th century Bohemian spa beaker in a deep crimson red glass. It has etched panels, and somewhat unusually they are filled with silver enamel. The panels are titled Gezundheit (health), Liebe (love), Freude (joy) and Krone dein Leben (crown your life). The mottos fit well with the spa ideals of increasing health and general well-being. Taking a retreat at a spa was of course very popular during the Victorian period, and those with more money could afford to do so overseas with the Bohemian region being very popular.
The glass is slightly trumpet in form with a thickened disc base and the base is flat ground. It dates around 1880 or so and is a nice and unusual example.
The silver to the etched panels has largely survived, but the silver lines to the body are all but worn away with just witness lines remaining. One minuscule nick to the rim. Wear to the base.
