Antique Bristol Green Glass Decanter - Claret Jug Form - Victorian c1860 (Code 2370)
A mid 19th century Victorian glass decanter in the claret jug style. It has a mallet shaped body which is somewhat unusual and there is a tricorn rim. The stopper is a good if not perfect fit and is of lapidary style. The handle is ribbed and gently twisted in the Stourbridge style. The base has had the pontil scar ground and polished out. It is made from lead glass in the Bristol green colour and would date around 1860.
The mark you can see to just below halfway down the body and slightly to the right is a captured air bubble in the glass from production. It is an interesting piece with uncommon features making it perfect for the collector of Bristol green.
Provenance: Part of a single owner collection of high quality Georgian and Victorian green glass from the Cheshire area.
Air bubbles in the glass from production, also some mineral inclusions trapped to the surface shown in image 5. Minor wear to body, plenty of period wear to base. Some fritting to stopper peg - appears to be largely from manufacture. Stopper of very good if not quite perfect fit - plenty good enough for use still.
