Antique Burmese Carved Ebonised Large Wooden Elephant with Mahout Figure (Code 1992)

  • £45000

Description

A large late 19th century Burmese carving of an elephant with mahout and howdah. The wood has been ebonised and is probably teak. It is carved with much detail including the small cross shapes all over the body typical of the Burmese style. The elephant is set on a plank base and has applied eyes and tusks. This large example is big enough to be a showpiece and is full of Southeast Asian style.

Condition

Generally very good for the period, some natural flaws in the wood and from the hand made nature. Part of the arcade border around the howdah missing, although this may be intentional (as the entry/exit point).
