Antique Chinese Porcelain Famille Rose & Enamel Mug/Tankard Qianlong or Jiaqing (Code 2075)

  • £17500

A large porcelain bodied famille rose and enamel tankard or mug. It is hand thrown and thickly potted making it near opaque. It is decorated with a vase having relief pink enamel in relief with the same design repeated verso. The other coloured enamels are also in relief, aside the red and gilt which are flat to the glaze. The potting marks are visible to the interior and there is decorative line drawing to the handle.

The shape is perhaps somewhat unusual, it is rather tall and large for a mug and the conical form is perhaps more commonly used for a jug rather than a drinking vessel, however there is of course no pouring spout. There are no marks to the base, as can be seen there are however air bubbles in the glaze, and there are also slightly visible chatter marks under the glaze. Late Qianlong or Jiaqing period c1780-1820.

Damage to the foot rim as shown in the images, some of the missing area has been filled in amateur fashion. The gilt is rubbed as expected for the period and there is just minor wear to the enamels. To the interior there is a piece of kiln frit adhered to the base.
