Antique Colonial Indian Silver Alms Bowl Shaped Vase - Calcutta Region c1880 (Code 2156)
A late 19th century Indian vase in the shape of an alms bowl. It is of double gourd shape with a handle and plain silver foot. The handle is decorated with acanthus leaves and studs. The body is decorated with buildings and trees in a continuous frieze around the top and bottom. The decoration is in the Calcutta style, unusually there do not appear to be any characters depicted aside one animal. There is a shield plaque to the upper body and this is etched with the initials 'AR' (or 'RA'). There are no makers marks which is typical for period Indian silver, it tests as Sterling grade silver.
Generally good as can be seen, some knocks and deformations to the rim and handles. Details nice and crisp with little polishing wear.
