Antique Doctors / Surgeons Travelling Case in Mahogany Wood - Victorian c1880 (Code 2243)
A late 19th century mahogany doctors travelling case. This is more the style of a working doctor/surgeons case than an apothecary box with drawers for tools rather than bottles. It has a flip top held with pivoting catches and a brass handle. There are five further graduated drawers. The case is lockable, however the latch plate and key are missing. The drop pin to secure the lower drawers is still present. The case has hand cut dovetail joints and the style and design could date it from around 1870-1900
The case contains a selection of medical equipment as shown and was probably used by a GP or community emergency doctor most recently. Everything you see in the images and the drawers will come with case. Note that the contents are newer than the case, and as it is not a fitted case it was likely originally supplied empty. There is a notebook in one drawer for controlled medicines and some notes in it suggest the case was in use until 1951. Even after this time it still retains that doctors surgery smell!
Lots of patina from use - just how you would want this type of item. Exterior latches and handle are good. No key and latch plate missing. Some losses to the base plank and perhaps a piece of facing missing below the bottom drawer. Internal contents condition ranges from good to poor. See images for external condition.
