Antique Dutch Delft Pottery Faience Glaze Large Arita Design Blue & White Plate (Code 1799B)
Dutch Faience Delft Plate
A large Dutch faience glazed delft plate. It combines both the Japanese Arita style and the Chinese Kangxi style, which is perhaps unsurprising given the Dutch East India Company traded extensively with both and brought back porcelain which was copied domestically. The decoration is of course hand painted and underglaze and the body is a relatively soft earthenware. It is large for a plate and would likely have been used either for serving, or simply as decoration and it is somewhat dished in the saucer shape. The central scene is typically oriental with a pagoda, flying bird and fisherman. There are large spur marks to the underside from firing. Date wise it would appear to be 18th century, although some sources record similar items going right back to the late 17th century. An interesting item.
Glaze losses and chips all around the rim, one larger chunk broken out of the rim and lost. Firing flaws, glaze pits, kiln frit adhesions etc as you would expect for an early example.
