Antique Early Victorian 9ct Gold Diamond & Sapphire Bug Brooch c.1850 (A2043)
Description
A fabulous early Victorian bug brooch. It is encrusted with natural mine cut diamonds of rose form in the wings and abdomen. The thorax is set with a beautiful natural sapphire of mixed cushion cut. It has a lovely intense blue and possibly Ceylon type. The eyes are two unusual greeny/yellow round stones. To the reverse it has a standard pin and c hook fastening with the pin being canted to go around the body. It also has a fixed safety chain. There are no hallmarks which is usual for this period, the underside of the body tests as 9 carat gold. The top of the mounting area appears to be silver.
A fabulous and rare piece of early Victorian jewellery dating to the mid 19th century.

Condition: Good for period. Some slight wear to the stones and mounts but nothing significant. Pin and clasp working fine. A beautiful item.
