Antique Edmond Lajouanie French Limoges Porcelain Hand Painted Plaque Old Couple (Code 1116)
A finely painted French Limoges porcelain plaque painted in monochromatic russet tones. It is a charming scene featuring an older couple, with the man tickling the lady with an ear of wheat. The painting is very realistic and beautifully executed as can be seen. It is signed to the lower left 'E Lajouanie', there is a paper label to the reverse with further details in French. These details are perhaps not quite right as it would appear the artist is Edmond (not Edouard), although some of the other details correlate to other sources. In summary; Edmond Lajouanie was born in Uzerche France in 1858; he was a painter and porcelain painter including of plates in the Limoges porcelain region; some of his work is retained at the Adrien Dubouché National Museum Cité de la céramique – Sèvres & Limoges; he was a student of Auguste Aridas (a listed artist).
There is little further information available about the artist aside a very small number of plates sold on the open market, and I have found no previous plaques. The plaque likely dates to the first years of the 20th century, the frame looks to be more recent and probably 1950's or 60's. It is certainly an interesting piece, and perhaps worthy of further investigation along with enjoying it's aesthetic appeal.
Frame with wear and aging, loss of gilt etc. Plaque with some light surface scratches and scuffs.
