Vintage Black & Gold Colour Edwardian Design Snowflake Mourning Brooch/Pendant (Code A278)
An unusual pinchbeck type metal openwork brooch/pendant with a snowflake design. It has a traditional pin with safety clasp and also a loop at the top of the brooch to allow hanging on a chain should you prefer. The snowflake represents fragility and the fleeting nature of life, so it is probably intended as a remake of a mourning brooch. The snowflake roundel is jet black and perhaps made from obsidian or onyx. The brooch is oval in shape made from scrolling designs interspersed with black round faceted stones and further dropper decoration to the bottom. Notice also the small round 'pearls' created from polishing the relief decoration to mimic seed pearls.
No makers' marks but it is impressed 'A537', probably by Sphinx in the 1960's.
Please note the display cushion is not included in the sale!
