Antique Elijah Jones Moulded Stoneware Elizabethan Pattern Jug c1840 Victoriana (Code 2443)
A very nicely moulded early Victorian stoneware jug by Elijah Wood. This little known pottery operated out of Cobridge in the Staffordshire potteries and was relatively short lived between 1831 and 1841 then merging with Edward Walley to become Jones & Walley. This jug was produced in 1840 or early 1841 before the merger.
The detail on this jug is quite superb for the medium and it is hard to believe it is nearly 200 years old while handling it. The interior is gloss glazed and the exterior is a matt tan colour. The handle is in the form of bunched canes. To the base is a white impressed pad mark with the makers name and the pattern name. The design is quite unusual with the top panels having bird forms with a mans head and oak leaves above. This alternates with an eagle type bird holding one end of a scroll. The main panels have barley twist polls and scrolled leaves and there is a distinctive pedestal foot.
Quite a rare piece for the moulded jug collector.
Particularly good order. Minor firing flaws. Firing cracks through the clay pad mark to the base (due to differential shrinkage when being fired). Foot lifted slightly during firing so can rock slightly on a dead flat surface.
