Antique English Boulle Ware Work Twin Inkwell Desk Stand - Lockwood of London c1860 (Code 0248)
A fine mid 19th century boulle ware desk stand with twin inkwells. It dates to the Victorian period around 1860 or so when this style was very fashionable. It is elaborately decorated with brass inlay over the traditional red mottled ground. The inkwells appear original and are diamond scallop cut with brass mounts. Inside the drawer it is stamped for Lockwood of London, making this an English rather than French example.
The set features a brass tiered stand to the rear and a candle holder build into the stamp box lid. There is a paper turner which again appears original. The lower drawer is curved to match the kidney shape of the set. Previously retailed by a London based Lapada dealer, and recently acquired by me from a private collection. A fine piece.
Generally good for type and period. Some lifting of the brass in places as expected for period, but nothing sprung away from the body. Lid fit to box not perfect, likely due to wood shrinkage over the years. A couple of repairs to the surface on the front right corner as viewed in main image. Inkwell liners with some damage. A couple of chips inside the rims of the inkwells, and the mounts have been reset with the traditional plaster method. Some movement in the brass rack mount where the fixings have loosened over time. A small piece of brass inlay lost to top side (left), part of an acanthus scroll. As you can see from the images it looks superb still.
