Antique French Kingwood & Gilt Bronze Mechanical Cigar Dispenser Box (Code 1960)

  • £39500

Description

A 19th century French cigar dispenser. It is in the Oriental style with pagoda shape top mounted with a gilt bronze figure smoking a pipe and seated on a cushion. The ormolu mounts set off the kingwood veneer and this would have been quite a high status piece in it's day using expensive materials. You rotate the figure at the top to open the shutters and reveal the cigars. The mechanism still functions so you can open the shutters as intended, which is quite a rare find. These mechanical dispensers can be found in a number of forms and are generally regarded as being produced around 1870-1900. The mechanisms often fail as they are made from hand cut wooden gears and shafts which are of course susceptible to damage, warpage etc. As such they should be treated carefully and gently to ensure continued function into the future.

Condition

Exterior generally good for period, slight veneer losses to the top. One gilt shell mountings to the shutters missing. Internally two of the wooden tri form bases which the cigars rest in are missing. Mechanism working pretty well with slight stickyness at times. A rare piece.
