Antique French Sevres Paris Enamel & Gilt Metal Jewel Casket/Trinket Box c1850 (Code 0920)
A superb French 19th century jewel casket with Sevres porcelain kiln fired panels. It has a gilt metal frame and all four sides and the lid have enamelled panels with raised turquoise jewelled enamelling. The panels are domed like cushions and set under the gilt metal frame. The box (metalwork) is possibly by Tahan of Paris, and items like these where known to have retailed through the Palais Royal in the mid 19th century. The casket is of small size and would have been for jewels or perhaps a prized ring or other small piece of jewellery. The lid is hinged and there is a friction clasp to keep it in place. A larger example of this design exists which contains small glass perfume bottles.
This item would of course have been very expensive in it's day and a prized possesion for the owner. It retains the original silk buttoned interior and is a delight to view.
Some losses of the enamel jewels mostly affecting the rear panel. Left side panel (as viewed head on) has fractures through two corners (right near the edges) with the pieces still held in place by the metal frame. Normal wear and aging to the metal. The interior original but worn of course given the material. Fabric to the underside base is a replacement. Has a rock when stood on a dead flat surface as one foot must be a little shorter.
