Description

A rare Spode china chocolate cup and saucer from the 2nd period (Josiah Spode II) circa 1820.  It has a deep cobalt blue ground and is hand enamelled with floral sprigs.  There are white 'jewelled' dots around the rim of the cup and the saucer.  The cup has twin caryatid angel handles finished in gilt.  Both pieces have a carefully hand painted mark in red to the base (mark 10 - Leonard Whitter). 
 
The saucer is quite deeply dished with the rim rolling up in a gentle curve.  From the enamels and pattern they appear to be an original pairing.
 

Condition

Cup good with some gilt wear to high points and the handles.  Saucer with a rim chip to the underside rim, and a chip which is likely a firing fault to the foot rim.  There is some unevenness in colour to the cobalt ground along with some tiny bubbles/dust in the glaze (all from production).  There is some wear to the saucer well from the cup being stood in place.
