Antique Grand Tour Bronze Renaissance Soldier Figure on Paperweight Base (Code 0815)
A 19th century cast bronze figure of a renaissance soldier with sword and shield and dark patination. These small bronze figures where typically collected on the Grand Tour by wealthy young travellers. It likely dates to the late 19th century and would have been brought back to the UK from perhaps Italy or Spain. It is set on a cast iron decorative base to make it into a paperweight and this appears contemporaneous to the figure. There are no makers marks, and this is usual for these pieces. Collecting grand tour figures can be great fun and they are typically of small size so not requiring a large space for display.
Some wear and aging with the bronze showing through in spots but no significant faults, see images for overall condition.
