Antique Indian Mahogany Wood & Brass Kerala Dowry / Jewellery Box (Code 1778)
A late 19th or early 20th century Indian dowry chest. Lovely pyramidal form lid, with this style being typical of the Kerala region. It has decorative brass mounts and a working lock to the front. Internally there is one sub division, this originally had a separate lid and lock which are no longer present. The main construction appears to be mahogany panels, and the box is of course hand made. It has a wonderful rustic charm and could of course be used for many purposes such as a jewellery box (which these were often used for after the wedding). When acquired the wood was almost black - I have gently cleaned the wood to reveal the colour and remove the worst of the surface dirt while protecting the overall antique look.

Normal wear and aging. Lock working and comes with the key, hinges fine. Internal lid and lock not present. Some panel pins missing from the decorative brass details. General minor knocks, indents and marks - see images for exterior condition. Oily odour to the interior, likely from having old tools or similar stored in it previously.
