Antique Indonesian Brass Kendi with Chased Design - Javanese / Surabaya c1920 (Code 2153)
An early 20th century chased brass Indonesian kendi probably from Surabaya in East Java. It is intended for drinking water with a hinged spout for filling (with air hole) and a spout for drinking. There is also a bridge between the two spouts which is closed off internally in this example. This type of vessel is more for ritual or occasion use rather than day to day drinking.
It is chased all over with patterns including key fret designs, scrolling leaves and the Indonesian style lotus flower motif. It has been made in a number of pieces and you can see the braze join where the main body meets the base. A nice example of a very scarce form dating c1920.
Generally good and displays nicely. There is an indent to the foot as can be seen. There are a number of indents to the body which are quite broad and shallow and as such do not show very obviously to display. The hinge to the filler spout is sloppy, this being from how it was made.
