Pair of Antique Italian Cast Bronze and Verde Antico Marble Romanesque Grand Tour Tazza (Code 1779)
A pair of verdi antico marble and bronze tazza dating to the early 19th century. These pieces would have been purchased in Italy as part of a Grand Tour by a young gentleman of note. Classically styled items such as these were popular purchases due to the tour being intended as a classical education for the participant and this early form of tourist ware mimicked the Greco-Roman style they were exposed to. These tazza have baluster stems and decorative handles and are cast with Romanesque heads. The bases are in verde antico marble, probably quarried from Greece at the time. Note although the castings match and they are clearly of the same supplier the base shapes are slightly different. They may have been used simply as decoration, or could also have been used as a card waiter or vide poche.
Aged patina to the metal work, minor wear and no significant rubbing. Brazed joints of stems to platters a little clumbsy, so possibly re-done (historic not recent). Small bend to base of one stem, probably as a result of a drop at some time.
