The hinged outer cover opens at the press of a small button to reveal a spring loaded metal carrier, which holds the coin while allowing it to be pressed down and removed. A large suspension ring is fitted at the top.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe edge of the internal carrier is marked “BEST NICKEL PLATED”, “MADE IN ENGLAND” and with the J.W.B. maker's mark. It dates to the late Victorian or Edwardian period, around the 1890s to 1900s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJ.W. Benson was an established London watchmaker, jeweller and retailer from 1847, known for watches, clocks, jewellery and personal accessories. The firm traded for many years from Ludgate Hill. On the front, a small enamel shield spells PORTRUSH, referring to the town on the north coast of Northern Ireland. Blue, green, white and brown enamel forms a chequered arrangement of small geometric designs.
