Antique Japanese Bronze Vase with Brown Patination & Root Design - Meiji Period (Code 2231)
A 19th century Japanese bronze vase of unusual form. It has a brown patination and a polished bronze coin set high on the neck. The base section has decoration in the style of roots growing downwards and the base is formed into a wave pattern. There are no makers marks and it is certainly an interesting piece. To the base there is a drilled and threaded hole, this may have been original and thus the item was meant to connect with something else, or it could be a later adaptation to turn it into a lamp base.
Some wear and the patina is uneven in places. Two indents to the rim, the images give a good overall idea of the condition.
