Antique Japanese Kutani Porcelain Hand Painted Birds Tea Cup Trio - Meiji c1900 (Code 2420)
A very pretty hand painted trio of Japanese eggshell porcelain consisting of a cup, saucer and side plate. The sky has pale tones and is punctuated by blossoms on branches. There are two brightly coloured birds somewhat reminiscent of fanciful pigeons. Notice also the fine detail to the tree and grass which is sketched in pen and ink style.
The porcelain is wonderfully fine and translucent and the rims have a well executed gold and black design. The design would perhaps suggest a Nagoya origin, but they are signed instead with a (partial) Kutani mark in red. Date wise they would be right at the end of the Meiji period, c1910.
Generally very good, slight loss of enamel at rims. Saucer with two fine hairlines (like stress hairlines and not damage) which are difficult to see.
Width: 18 cm ( 7 1/8 inch ) the side plate
Height: 5 cm ( 2 inch ) the cup
Weight: 256 grams (before packing)
